Ukrainian refugees get free membership at Burton and Uttoxeter Leisure Centers

Three leisure centers in East Staffordshire offer free membership to Ukrainian refugees. Meadowside Leisure Centre, Uttoxeter Leisure Center and Shobnall Leisure Complex are donating memberships to support Ukrainians and their families seeking refuge in the UK.

The free 12-month membership will allow adults access to the gym, swimming and group exercise classes, with public swimming and junior gym sessions available for children aged 11-15 years. Public swimming and soft play are available for children under 10.

All memberships will include Synergy Dance online classes, accessible through Everyone Active’s virtual fitness app, Everyone On-Demand. The leisure centers are run by leisure operator Everyone Active in partnership with East Staffordshire Borough Council.

To qualify for free membership, refugees will need to provide proof of an email from the Home Office, detailing their port reference number. Dan Mclean, Contracts Manager for Everyone Active, said: “Giving memberships through the three leisure facilities we operate in East Staffordshire is a practical way to support Ukrainian refugees.

“We hope sport and physical activity will provide a welcome slice of normality, while providing a safe and supportive space, so they can feel part of their local community. We understand that gym membership may not be one of their top priorities, but felt it was important to play our part and offer our support wherever possible.

“We hope this offer will make the refugees feel welcome and help them adjust to life in their local community.” Councilor Bev Ashcroft, Deputy Head of Leisure at Borough Council, said: “Ukrainians recently arrived in East Staffordshire have been through so much.

“We hope this offer can provide support to promote their health and well-being.” Further details are available by visiting the Everyone Active website.
