Reliance Jio Prime subscription ends March 31: what’s next?

Reliance Jio rocked the Indian telecommunications space with the launch of its affordable, data-centric network. After giving out freebies for over six months since launch, Mukesh Ambani-owned telecommunications major introduced Prime membership at Rs 99 with the promise of offering subsidized top-up options and additional perks for a period of time. ‘a year.

Jio Prime subscriptions, which went into effect on April 1 of last year, are valid until March 31. Now, with the subscription expiration approaching, Jio is expected to make an announcement very soon.

While there is nothing official yet, the expectation is that the company will either remove the Prime membership or offer it as a free service altogether.

Here’s what the company came up with in the first iteration of Prime membership:

  • Free unlimited data and voice services for one year at the effective price of Rs 10 per day
  • Special recharge plans with additional data and validity
  • Free VoLTE based voice calls to any network, even roaming with no downtime either.
  • Free access to the Jio suite of applications

Prime membership was initially rolled out as a loyalty program to retain subscribers as the company shifted from free to paid services. In the first step, Prime membership was advertised as a limited time offer. However, over time, the company continued to offer the membership to get more subscribers. Now, according to Jio’s official portal, there is no mention of the services the company offers to unprivileged subscribers. Therefore, it is safe to assume that the subscription-based membership program may eventually go away.
