Owner of a golf club in the UK offering free membership in exchange for help with maintaining the green

The owner of a nine-hole golf club says people can play for free provided they help maintain the course and grounds.

Located in Saddleworth, Greater Manchester, UK, Hollyville has been described as a “hidden gem”.

And all owner Nick Cotterrill-Waring wants in exchange for access to the secluded course is help with its upkeep.

The course measures 2,726 meters on 15 acres of land. The area was facing an uncertain future with developers keen to build housing there.

Cotterrill-Waring stepped in, the Saddleworth Independent reported, but his funds did not extend to maintaining the course.

He told the newspaper: “I never dreamed that I would live in a place like this. I always pinch myself, I’m here.”

The landlord told the newspaper he understood the need for accommodation but feared that if it were developed it would become “a real eyesore”.

Some are skeptical of his plans, with one writing on the council’s planning portal: “I suspect this bid is not genuinely ‘golf course’ related, but part of a plan longer term for broader development.

“The golf course has not been used or maintained for many years, and access could be more easily achieved by upgrading the existing gate on Tunstead Lane or a number of alternatives.”

He added: “The plan now is to get it back as good as possible. But I can’t do it myself that’s why I need the help of the community to help get it back to its old glory.

“In return, I’m happy that people come and play a round on the course. Maybe they feel a bit intimidated going to a golf club.

“They can come here, bring their asses and enjoy a few hours hitting a ball. It’s great for me too because I only recently played golf for the first time.”

Volunteers can be expected to assist in the planting of native wildflowers and wild plants around the golf course boundaries and ponds to encourage and support wildlife.

They are also keen to install bird/bat houses.
