Hastings YMCA offers free membership to sixth graders

HASTINGS, Neb. (KSNB) – The Hastings Family YMCA helps keep kids entertained by offering a free membership to sixth-graders. Kids can get in and use the pool, basketball courts and more.

The school has been offering the free program since 2019 – when between 100 and 200 middle school students have registered. When COVID-19 hit, Rich Williams, director of membership for the YMCA of Hastings, said the offer had not been as popular.

“I have about 26 kids, which is mind boggling with a city of 26,000 people,” Williams said. “But, it was on my first list to be able to enter schools. I spoke to my boss, Troy, to be able to organize something so that I could go to these schools, meet these classes … “

Although the number is decreasing, Williams said there are reasons they have kept the community membership offering free.

“This grade five class doesn’t always meet other kids from other schools, so I think it’s a great opportunity for the kids to come to the YMCA, to build those relationships, so when they come into grade six, you know, new school, college, new kids, they’re already building that confidence for themselves, ”Williams said.

The free membership lasts for one year and to enroll people can fill out an application on the YMCA of Hastings website, return the completed form to the “Y” and bring in the grade six student who wishes to join. free.
