Get three months free membership at your local recreation center

Durham County Council is offering three months free unlimited access to its recreation centers as part of its Move campaign.

Available this month, the new Thrive offer gives you a 15 month full membership at one of the many centers in the county for the price of 12. With facilities ranging from swimming pools and gyms to fully equipped gyms. , along with a full program of classes including Yoga, Pilates & Bodybalance, Bootcamp, Kettlebells, and HiiT, you can be sure to find an activity that’s right for you.

After the disappointment of the Christmas lockdown last year, we all want to make this festive period unforgettable. But, as we all know, too much seating and too much indulgence can take its toll, leaving you lazy, bloated, and generally in a bad mood.

Instead of giving up on exercise this holiday season, why not make a commitment to keep moving most days of the week? Whether it’s a refreshing stroll with friends or family in one of our many parks and green spaces or a swim in your local recreation center, getting out of the house and moving more will do wonders for your mood, not to mention your digestion after all that rich food.

Here are some of the activities you can participate in for free during this festive period to boost your physical and mental well-being:

  • Walking – a great way to stay active, regardless of your fitness level. Learn more about walking (and running) in the county, including information on local routes as well as coastal and rural walks, guided walks, and how to find clubs in your area.
  • Parkrun – Managed by volunteers, these free 5km events take place every Saturday across the county. Open to all, people of all ages and all levels participate in these friendly and popular events. You can run, jog or walk the course. Use Parkrun’s handy event map to find your nearest event.
  • Couch to 5K – thousands of people have benefited from this race plan designed for absolute NHS beginners. The plan includes three runs per week and begins with a mix of running and walking to gradually build your fitness and endurance. Whether you’ve never run before or just want to get more active, Couch to 5K is a free, easy way to get fitter and healthier.
  • MyWellness App – the free Mywellness app allows you to connect to your local recreation center to access free virtual classes on demand, Couch to 5K as well as personalized workout plans that you can do at home and outside.
